art I think part of what made it special is that because of xerox machines people for the 1st time could do these cheaply and w/ no training . after the overblown 70s aor rock, the only logical conclusion was to go cheap trashy and mean.
on the one hand, it's hard to explain to the kids what it was like. on the other hand, the dadaists did this sort of thing first. before them, the aestheticists/decadents did it. etc..
i once saw a book about Greenwich Village in the late 1800s. and there were some groups of people that dressed all weird on purpose, to shock. like they'd stick a feather in their hat and walk around with one pantaloon leg rolled up. kind of punk rock, o.g. stylin yo
