i think an artist should do whatever he wants, and if someone likes it, cool. but in my opinion hess's best posters are the ones that don't have puns. the puns kind of cheapen the work. also there is NO variety in his technique.
i'd like to see what hess would do if Six Finger Satellite commissioned him to do another gig poster. like would the second poster also have a six fingered satellite?
excellent illo, made to order for the group's name. incidentally, most pirates were gay and would do it with one another, according to a book i saw in the store. instead of spending their loot on women whores, they would spend it on a) men whores or b) booze. his/tory!
well, i may as well post a comment on this poster (since everyone else already has). in this megatech high-turbo ultrafast industrial era, gig posters that have this mellow soothing feel (like AA's etc) can be seen as having a built-in irony. i mean, culturally, we're way beyond mellow. then again, they could be a reaction to the aforementioned high-powered onslaught. and then again, it could just be an exercise in prettiness.
