Default so my dog has diabetes

found out today my dag has diabetes. she should be ok with daily medication and watching her diet.
my questions:
has any of you ever cared for a dog or pet with diabetes?
do any of you have insurance for your pets and if so, do they cover medication or just vet visits?

thanks

my cat has diabetes. He gets 2 shots a day (5 units of vetsulinx2) and we give him a special diabetic canned food at night. He tolerates it really well from me. If anyone else gives him the shot, he takes off and we can't find him for an hour.

A friend of mine has a diabetic dog and says giving him the shots is easier than giving them to my cat since he has so much more scruff. He does require more insulin though so she goes through a bottle of insulin more often than I do w/ my cat. Obviously.

Don't have insurance for the cats but it is my understanding that if your dog was previously covered and this is not a pre-existing thing (like human insurance) that they'll cover visits but probably not medication. I could be wrong.

Good luck. Our cat has had diabetes for about 4 years now and he's going strong, his weight fluctuates but overall, he's a badass. We think the steroids in the insulin make him think he's the bully since he kicks a lot of feral cat ass nowadays.

I had a cat with diabetes growing up. He got one shot a day, in the morning, and other than that was pretty much normal. He lived to be about 18, ten years with the diabetes. We'd just give him some wet food in the morning and give him his shot while he was eating, didn't bother him a bit.

yeah it looks like most pet insurance won't cover pre existing conditions .
she has to get 2 shots a day too. 20 units each. so that's like 3 bottles a month. it's 40 bucks a pop at my vet, do you mind if i ask how much y'all pay?
see ya at flatstock?

We get the vetsulin for about $26 and a lot of times, since I'm such a good client (with 6 cats, I kinda have to be!) they remember me when people come in to donate their insulin after their poor pets die and then they give me the bottles free. So you might want to check with your vet about whether they can keep you in mind if anyone donates the same insulin your dog will need.

We'll be at Flatstock hopefully, if I'm not having babies by then! We'll see. I do hope to though b/c I need some great new art prints for the boys' room...

See y'all there if we do go!

Wally, unless I am mistaken, the insulin bottles are 10ml, which is 1,000 units. That would be 25 days to a bottle wouldn't it?

Our dog just got it too. He gets 2 shots a day, but only 7 units per shot. He has been fine with it so far, but its only been about a week.
