after a quick check on my iTunes, some other rap covers...

Snoop Dogg covering Biz Markie's "The Vapors"
Def Squad (Erick Sermon, Redman, Keith Murray) covering Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight"
and
Blackstar covering Slick Rick's "Children's Story"

plus in rap, A LOT of it is composed with heavy sampling of other songs. perhaps that can be considered doing a cover in a whole other aspect.

Exactly. I didn't put my name on it because I love hip hop music.

Speaking of covers:
P.O.S did a pretty awesome cover of "I am I Be" by de la soul on his latest album.
Def Squad did almost an exact duplicate of rappers delight.
Kanser did a cover of "the silent treatment" by the roots
Snoop also covered the vapors by biz markie on his second album. But since no one bought his 2nd album, no one noticed.
didnt mos def cover slick rick?
I heard a cover of welcome to the terror dome by public enemy. Didnt catch who it was though.

There arent really alot of complete cover songs in hip hop. Mostly just using a line or two, or scratching part of a verse.

Unless you count concerts. In that case I've seen at least ten different people cover tribe called quest.

Best rap cover ever is Snoop's Gin and Juice done by the Soggy Bottom Boys.

I think it's funny that rap is so concerned about biting, when (at least early on) all they did was take samples of other people music. So biting is just about lyrics?

And The Gourds did the Gin & Juice cover, though I've seen it attributed to two dozen different bands...

Actually in the very begining the mc was just there to hype up the crowd for the dj. It wasnt until later that the rappers became the focal point and the djs moved to the background. Djs became just the dude playing records for the rapper to rap over, which evolved into layering different samples together.

Anyway, you hardly ever hear about biting anymore. Since the only way to get air play now days is to sound exactly like every other asshole rapper.

hell, i bet there was a shxt-ton of biting going on during those early "call and response" years.

if somebody back in the day trademarked, "somebody say, HO!", they'd be a billionaire.
