Have there been any rap artists besides RUN-DMC to "cover" a song? Why don't rap artists cover other rap artists songs?

Rap is the world's most self-referencing music. A lot of rappers take lines from each other and put them in their rhymes. But I've never heard a rapper cover another rapper's song.

Snoop did La di da di by slick rick
Mac 10 did a semi cover of Roxanne Roxanne by UTFO

there are way more I just cant think if them.


The reason I hate rap is that its been feeding on itself for years. Same beats.. same rhymes. Wallowing in its own filth.

Not all rap ... you know what im talking about though.

ICP did a cover of Posse On Broadway. Now, I am not claiming ICP are actually "rappers" per se' nor are they any good at all BUT I will say that cover made me chuckle in a couple of places. I was actually surprised they didn't ruin the song entirely.

E40 did a somewhat cover of My Posses on Braodway too.

That track sort of broke the mold. At that point, it was considered taboo, because biting was the cardinal sin.

My favorite rap cover by another rapper is from '02

Busta Rhymes doing a cover of a previously remixed, Pete Rock version of Public Enemy's "Shut 'Em Down"

What you'll find with most rap covers is that the second artist not only flips the original to make it their own, but also alters 50%-90% of the original lyrics. Not sure if that lets it still fall within the "cover" category, but with rappers always quick to throw out the "biting" card, it's probably as close as you're gonna get.

hip hop is/was about originality. so rappers wouldn't cover songs but rather flip 'em as bobby said, give shout outs or record their own song to try and do better. there was such as thing as biting styles, etc. which was frowned upon and copycats got no love. same goes for graffiti when talking about originality. or at least that's how the hip hop i grew up with was.
