The lettering is about 40" wide, made up of three separate pieces of 10mm clear glass tubing filled with Krypton.

Right now I'm working on some larger, outlined letters. The "K" is filled with neon and mercury vapor (the mercury turns the red neon discharge to electric blue).

I'm a graphic design grad student in San Francisco, this semester I had an elective and was free to choose a class from another department. Usually my fellow graphic design students take printmaking classes in the Fine Arts department, but since I know how to screenprint and have several letterpresses in my living room, I wasn't interested in spending money on those classes. Neon Sculpture caught my eye, I figured it was something I was unlikely to try otherwise and its been a lot of fun... and a lot of broken glass. Nothing quite like shattering four hours worth of work in a split second.

I finished my second sign this Monday, I'll post pics once I get some good ones.

For people in the Bay Area who want to do some glass-bending, The Crucible in Oakland has classes in neon fabrication.

Nibot, Nansen is looking good. That portrait has always been a favourite of mine.
