Okay, Paul. There's the old adage that you can't please everybody. You never will, nor will anyone else, so don't let it get you down if you wind up on someone's shit list. By the same token, don't let it go to your head if someone thinks you're the greatest thing since sliced Elvis. You won't be able to meet all your critics half way and find common ground: if they stay critical of you, so be it. Not everyone will like you, not everyone will like what you do or how you do it. Not everyone likes broccoli either. Don't sweat it, man. Whether people are patting you on the back or slapping you in the face, just be gracious about it and try to take some lesson away from the experience. |

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all
How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big, Swampy this time you're all alone
But it's time you started living
It's time you let someone else do some giving
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it

Well, i havent read this whole thread, and only bits and pieces of other threads that you've posted in but you come off as very combative... Let Richie's shit go, and dont fight over every comment. There is good feedback and bad feedback, part of your job as a designer is to sort through and figure out which you need to take to heart and which you need to set aside. There is no reason, especially on a message board to go head to head with folks over every little thing. You wont come out ahead, no one will.

Which could be said about a lot of work on this site... but yeah I agree with you in this example, however I don't think it should be the only critique of this poster. As a designer who can't draw for shit I tend to use sourced material, but I see your point in how Paul has used his. |

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"

I was tired of my lady, we'd been together too long.
Like a worn-out recording, of a favorite song.
So while she lay there sleeping, I read the paper in bed.
And in the personals column, there was this letter I read:
"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape."
I didn't think about my lady, I know that sounds kind of mean.
But me and my old lady, had fallen into the same old dull routine.
So I wrote to the paper, took out a personal ad.
And though I'm nobody's poet, I thought it wasn't half-bad.
"Yes, I like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne.
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon, and cut through all this red tape.
At a bar called O'Malley's, where we'll plan our escape."
So I waited with high hopes, then she walked in the place.
I knew her smile in an instant, I knew the curve of her face.
It was my own lovely lady, and she said, "Oh, it's you."
And we laughed for a moment, and I said, "I never knew"..
"That you liked Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape."
"If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain.
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape.
You're the love that I've looked for, come with me, and escape." |

I close my eyes
Only for a moment, then the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind
Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind, ohh
Now, don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind

"ya know, this big debate about whether a gigposter has to be "appropriate " for the band or not seems to been settled about 20,000 gigposters ago. the answer seems to be, "no". you can take about that many of the posters on this sight and replace them with band names from any of them at total random and have exactly the same results. in fact, often when a poster artist actually tries to make it appropriate, it turns out to be a much higher criticized poster because the actual lameness of the particular band in question dominates the concept of the poster.
gigposters only have to express the correct ATTITUDE to be effective. as far as real concept goes, it's pretty much "whatever."
that's the observation i'm ending up with over and over." -art

Here's what I don't understand. Richie, why do you care about these posters for bands you don't care about in the first place? I'm pretty sure I've said it before but it just wouldn't make sense if you LOVED a poster for a band you don't give a shit about. Two different worlds. That's it. |

Kazu, of Blonde Redhead is a huge hose fan. She rides em a lot, I guess. One fine day, the horse she was riding bucked her off. She was injured real, real bad. She broke her jaw and the band was put on hiatus for 3 years.
So, Skeletons are a symbol death or danger.
The girl riding it is the innocent pleasure.
The best thing is that I was unaware of this incident while making the decoration. I just thought the image fit the music well. There ya have it.

I'm not defending this design, but sometimes the general punters don't give a fuck about most the things we are concerned with. Like Art said "its purty..." and Paul has tapped into that. Good or bad? your call. Good thread though. |

actually, no it's not. design is an area that one NEVER stops learning. the moment you kick back and think you have it dicked is precisely the moment you are over.
to be honest, 6-8 years o university level anything would turn you into and idiot. but, the point i'm trying to make is that design AT IT"S BEST (caps intentional) is a very difficult thing to do and just making things look cool and attractive and nice is only very very early level thinking. that's basically what a computer program does FOR you. design is much more than that.
look, i have nothing aginast this poster. hell, i'd hang it in my house - it would go very well in the living room. but is it truly GREAT DESIGN? no. without a doubt i say that.
the designer has some deep thinking to do before he gets design to the point of truly great work. needs 6-8 years of shk (school of hard knocks). |

Ok, got ya. So basied on that, true graphic design will blow minds and baffle even the said "experts". That's a pretty weird way to measure good design against decorative design. I'm not at all going for Hemingway here. I don't even really like looking at this anymore. I don't regret it. I'm just sick of it.
I also don't think 6-8 years of unversity level classes will necessarily generate a "good designer" |

its contradictory because he was talking about 2 different standards. in standard a. i think he was just saying that visually it looks cool, a surface observation. in standard b. he was putting it in the context of graphic design as a whole and not just whether it looked pretty but whether it conveyed a message but more importantly would hold up down the line. |

i'm trying to say something simply and directly to help paul understand the point being pounded into his skull by several folks here. the problem is, it's not an easy thing to point out. that's why it's taught with 6-8 years of university level classes. at it's best, design is very difficult to knock out. this poster is just fine. but it ain't much simultaneously. there is no contradiction in that. just viewpoints.

graphic design is language. if this poster were a sentence, it would read like a surface description of some record other than the one produced by this particular band. but it would be written very nicely and the the verbage would appeal to you and make you think you understand what is being said. it would make you feel smart for having actually been able to read i. but, it's a generic piece the writer has used for dozens of reviews and just sort of sticks in a few new words and attributes to the band in question.

no, paul. i'm saying take it out of the current context of trendy design and start to eliminate the gimmicks. once you've taken a couple of them away, the actual design and concept are revealed to be little more than tricks that make you think it's more than it is. it's called "decoration" as opposed to "design". this is a highly decorative pievce and not a very high achieveing design piece. it's jes' "purtty" as all heck, though.

Art, so yer saying that that little convert image to B&W, and crop in tight trick works on any "grade A" design? I don't understand. Why isn't every brilliant composition maped out like that? |

ok, here's some "straight talk":
if i were looking at this in one of my classes, i'd give it a "b" grade. it's competent, pretty, interesting to look at. it has a lot going for it. but. ultimately it's empty. this image is a generic image rendered with all the tricks that we currently accept as "attractive" in design (wide margins, 'designerly retro' typography, fashionably disturbing and ironic imagery, a pretty girl and a skeleton, absolutley JUST the right colors, etc. etc.) it's going to become a dead end cliche by the time we hit the next decade. it's totally OF the the moment with no 'legs' (ability to have a long shelf life) to the poster at all.
try this test - convert this design (in your mind) to b&w. then crop it tight - with no wide 'art print' margins. doe sit still make any sense at all for this band? or is it simply some cool looking image with any old band name at all tacked on it, centered at the bottom like a caption of a cartoon gag panel?
it falls apart almost instantly, right?
b+. maybe. actually, in my class, a 'c' (rather average).
class over. |

You have no soul. It shows in your posters. You're a part of the problem, not the solution. Go make greeting cards or some shit. You have nothing to offer here.

Richie, when you say "Shitty designers". I don't even know what that means in the below context. It makes no sense.
Art-I'll agree, there are many thousands of one-size-fits-all images that people create, with little, or no thinking behind them. That goes for many things, not just gigposters.
For now, I think it's ok to make images that are interesting to look at that maybe do nothing more than depict a mood or convey the attitude of the music. I think that's what makes a "good" gigposter. Sometimes is cool to "concept" the hell out of your design too. But what the hell do I know? I've only made 14 posters. |

Shitty designers can't make appropriate cool. If you attempt appropriate and end up with lame...then that's your fucking fault.
If you have no attitude of your own and try and mimic attitude...it shows and that is even lamer. |

ya know, this big debate about whether a gigposter has to be "appropriate " for the band or not seems to been settled about 20,000 gigposters ago. the answer seems to be, "no". you can take about that many of the posters on this sight and replace them with band names from any of them at total random and have exactly the same results. in fact, often when a poster artist actually tries to make it appropriate, it turns out to be a much higher criticized poster because the actual lameness of the particular band in question dominates the concept of the poster.
gigposters only have to express the correct ATTITUDE to be effective. as far as real concept goes, it's pretty much "whatever."
that's the observation i'm ending up with over and over. |

Having actually seen and heard this band I can't for the life of me see how it fits them in any way. Aside from the fact that the band and this poster are fairly boring. But, boring in different ways. At least the band are semi interesting and doing their own thing. This is just boring and looks like a lot of other boring posters.

By default I've already gone farther than you ever will.
So we're clear...you are a nobody. You just haven't realized it yet. The signs are there.
1. Passive aggressive victim stance.
2. Generally generic design style, unidentifiable from many others.
3. The band name could be changed to...Fuck...High on Fire, even...and this would still be the exact same poster, which isn't a rock poster, but an exercise in graphic wankery where the audience is expected to think you are the clever one and you've done the band a favor where in reality...the band has done you a favor for even allowing you to put their name on your eggshell paper.
4. You're a wimp and you're safe and you're generic. There are thousands of you. And to top it off...there are real life interesting people out there that do this boring shit better than you. |

Premium Membership is $10 a year. Having a hosted page of your artwork on site that's known to attracted collectors and through which you can sell your wares is not worth .83 cents a month to you? It's not really about the benefits you get from it (which are many) but the support you're giving Clay and in turn, the rest of the poster community. I really don't understand this whole reasoning about not throwing Clay a few bucks for his time and hard work. |
