I have, however, found a really great used book store that has a SURPLUS of 50s press clip books, hidden in one of the backrooms of their basement under a bunch of other books where no one else will look. im buying them up one by one. the owner keeps asking me where i find them, and i just keep saying "oh they are in the back."

RichieGoodtimesSend RichieGoodtimes a message :   Art? What makes you think I'd actually spend a bunch of time searching through type books to find that one or even bothering to think I have it on my computer. There are enough letters there for me to redraw the whole fucking alphabet. I never said you're doing things the easy way, either.   2002-09-17 17:34:58
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   i was just throwing some old type books into my spagetti sauce (speedballs are the best for that quick pick-me-up), and i just realized i made the wrong challenge to richie.
here's my challenge:
1) duplicate this poster on your computer. (i'll bet you can't even come close to matching the typeface, much less create the images).
2) i dare you, i double DOG dare you to do this same poster BY HAND! this goes for eveybody who seems to think i do it the easy way. until you try it by hand, i think anybody who makes fun of my methods can go piss up a rope.
and richie, you can quote me on that.

kevin jonesSend kevin jones a message :   plastk: if i were to do fine art with litho stones, that would make me a fine artist. i prefer being a graphic designer (not to say i wouldnt enjoy doing that, just to do it, ya know). graphic design has its own history, and it amazes me, and much of that history is being lost to the digital age, not to say i dont appreciate the ease that comes with producing on a computer, but what happens when the power goes out? i try not to ever pass up the opportunity to learn something new, those opportunities dont come along very often.   2002-09-17 16:38:22

jasoncrossSend jasoncross a message :   Actually Kevin, when I went to school for design this non-computer method is exactly how I learned. I tought myself the computer, never took one class in it. All my design classes were with x-acto's, stats, wax machine, spray tack. And guess what...there was other methods before that...so, why use the advancement of stat? why not do stone litho like the REAL poster artist at the turn of the century. Thats my point...every method is an advancement in a sense to streamline a process. This method Art used is not the 'old' way, just a way thatt has seen its day come and go in the industry as a standard. I think thats a good thing...many artist would not be doing the designs they are doing, nor would this site exist, without computers.   2002-09-17 16:30:32

BLTSend BLT a message :   Naw, You didnt fuck up the film Art, it just happens when you splice film that has halftones. Art does all his films himself (without a stat camera) and his posters are alway the easiest for me to print. By the way Art I need those corrections asap.   2002-09-17 16:23:38

i also doubt you could do this poster on a computer (without a stat camera) - especially in the three hours it took me to do it from ground zero. but then i've been doing this a long long time and i'm real fast. i'm sure there's certain things that you can beat me with on your computer. ok, so what?
also, you can't match the type. also brian is right i fucked up the film (by hand, yes i did the film by hand) without your help. i'd like to thank you for that, but it's all mine (it's the best part).
