I used to take the 1-9 trains from Columbus Circle to South Ferry every night for 5 years. With my ex-wife away at school, sometimes I'd get off at random stops & walk the city, sometimes I wouldn't take the train at all & do the walk straight down. Sometimes there would be track fires & the train would spit you off at some obscure spot & you'd figure, screw it, I'll just walk,...
And that's just how the towers looked, once you started hitting the Courtland Street or City Hall stop,... black flecked with window lights, a giant landmarked that dwarfed everything else downtown. After 9/11, I would sit in Washington Square, smoking a stoag & watching street performers & pretty punk rock Asian chcks heading south to Chinatown,... & would get this overwhelming feeling like I was being watched. I'd crane my neck around & the empty patch of sky that the towers would normally blot out just seemed to scream out at me,... like the horror of that day was scarred on the sky itself,...
