Scorps: German hard prog until Uli left, then straight-arrow party metal
Mercyful Fate: made two of the best metal albums ever
WASP: funny, couple OK songs, mostly stupid (dumb enough to have Metallica open for them in 84)
King Diamond: first LP was pretty good, then went kooky with the Broadway dramatics
Venom: not very good, for some reasons metalically-clueless indie/punkers zoned in on these guys (Sonic Youth , Beasties, etc), true headbangers were puzzled, Slayer were 1000x better
'80s hair metal: mainly started by Motley Crue's Theatre of Pain record, roots in Kiss and Aerosmith, driven by poon, money, and drugs, 100% false metal
I'm finally going to get to use an illustration of Blackie for an upcoming local 80's metal tribute show! The illustration was originally meant for the WASP tour that fizzled and got dumped by the promoters due to Blackie's rockstar attitude.
I'm passing the metal knowledge down to my middle child. He has the heart of a true metal warrior. He's getting really into punk now as well so I guess I'll have to pass what I know about that to him as well.
Long live the Metal!
Blackout was a great record though. Some bands always seem to have that "one" record where they get big and then all of a sudden the turn to shit...and really fucking bothers me. Like AC/DC with "For those about to Rock" and " Aerosmith" with "Night in the Ruts" It's just fucking baffling.
I usedto work in this warehouse with all the Mexican Metalheads who fucking WORSHIPPED King Diamond. I'd fuck with them all day saying KD is Gay Ozzy fucking rules his ass.
They get so pissed
"FUK JU MANG! KEENG DIAMONDS DOWN WID DA DEVIL AND SHIT!
it was rad.
Scorpions is kind of a sad story. They've been around since the early seventies. Put out great records like Lonesome Crow, Virgin Killers, etc. And then Blackout "broke" big and it was all fuckin' power ballads after that (like Jeph said). So much great stuff from that circle of bands UFO, MSG, Rainbow. Incestuous. I wouldn't have ever lumped them in the glam camp though.
Fear: all glam.
No see Frank the first record in 84 War and Pain is the best VoiVod. Well maybe RRROOOAAARRR! was good also. Thats was 86. Killing Technology came out in 87. Master Piece!
Your all fools. You know nothing of the metal arts. One day I'll school you all on the real TRUTH.
Except Frank of course. I imagine he knows everything about everything.
The most "underground" band I ever heard back then was like
Venom. Sorry, I was a child of MTV. My musicak horizons didn't broaden until I got a bit older...And to answer your question the Scorpions were one of the few bands to have a career in both camps. Their early stuff up to about "Blackout" was testosterone
driven and after their first "Power Ballad" is was time for the
lipstick.
I'm not talking about the hair metal. Listen there were 2 metal camps in the 80's. The "Let's look like chicks and sing pussy tunes" i.e. Poison, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue. And then there were the"Let's wear leather and spiked wristbands and sing about Dungeons & Dragons shit" i.e. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rainbow
Of course looking back now it was all "a bit feminine" back back in the day it was kewl. Listen it was either that or The Fucking Thompson Twins.
Like, whats cool about trying to look like a woman? Pursing your lips for the camera and wearing heels?
Like, when Bowie or the Dolls did it, it was shock, and therefore it had a 'point'.
But after that...uggghhh
I saw Maiden a couple of times...way back. I think the first time Accept opened for them..(German Metal rules) and the 2nd time
it was Twisted Sister....good times
these bands suck donkey balls.
played on a bill with helen killer b4 and whoa hoo are they ever shit system.
they played the same song twice.
"goin' insane
i feel it in my brain..."
no, u just suck.
