Who's this Coop fella?
hell, we ALL rip-off someone. You can basically see every influnce in my work coming a hundred miles away. I've no problem with that. My only complaint about this piece is that Coop has such a beautiful touch and line quality it seems kind of inane to reproduce something of his without capitalizing on that aspect.
Tornado's not too far from being wrong though. While you can't be sued for "look and feel", you can be sued for directly ripping off someone elses work. Coop would probably win (even though I doubt he'd bother). Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with "being influenced" by another artist...My Electric Hellfire Club poster was critized for looking too much like a Coop piece (which I acknowledged). The difference is, I didn't use any of his art - it was 100% original. My advice to the designer would be to be a little more careful. Changing the pose would have made a huge difference. Different clothes and type of guitar would have helped also. Just changing the colors doesn't cut it unfortunately.
"influenced" is fine. "tracing" is bad.
point taken, i looked at some more of his stuff, and looks like he uses the promo images and just tweeks them a little, he did 2 limp bizkits with the same method..
ok, so hes a tracer :) "chasing amy" oh well.. ill admit when im wrong
but the other point, there are some artists who do base their whole portfolio off some other artists u know..
good point nolen!
yeah, it's a cool poster, but (not to be rude) only because it's a cool image (that Coop originally created). But, as long as this artist isn't trying to sell this poster/flyer whatever then it's okay I think...but dont' just trace some other working artist's piece and try to make money off of it.
I'm fine with showing influences, hell I did a poster as an homage to Will Eisner (that as soon as there's a good picture of it will be up here) where I tried to make it as reminiscent of his work as possible, but still my own, this is just a tracing.
Nothing wrong with tracing, I do it all the time...but in a different way... Again, as long as this "Veegun Artwork Designs" isn't trying to sell/make money off of this work, I have no problem with it. Hell, I've stolen tons of images for flyers, but yknow...I'm not getting paid for those
one thing that i was watching on vh1.. they were doing the top 100 albums of all time, and a comment was made that some people base their whole carrers over one beatles song..
i do think some artists are hugely influenced by one artist, and that is where they are comin from.. u know? its cool if people relate to it..
i mean, i think we can see artists on this board and say, "OK" CHANTRY RIPOFF, or "ok" kozik ripoff.. but is it really a ripoff or an influence?
i dont know, have to ask the artists..
i know you can look at my paintings, and say, oh warhol.. its simple, u know? but i grew up with warhol and max and lichtenstein.. so that is how i trained..
still a cool poster :)
