Beto RamirezSend Beto Ramirez a message :   I respect in every sense Art Chantry. But seeing the complete poster (not only illo) i mean the whole stuff, i think the finish is great and different. The first time i saw this poster made me want to have an idea for one of my own. This poster is and will be one of my favorites of all time. 8)   2004-07-28 16:28:44
ZELIGSend ZELIG a message :   They kill with two color too. Next to Almera's Turbonegro poster, the coolest thing I picked up at Flatstock was an Ames poster for a production of Clockwork Orange. Great illustration and great everything on it.   2003-09-19 23:11:19
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   I agree. Ames posters are right up there with the best ever in my opinion. Great, great stuff.   2003-09-19 21:05:14

John ASend John A a message :   The thing to remember about these Ames posters is they are all merch, not unlike the garden variety $35.00 T-Shirt.
This poster? meh... next?

Cody PomeroySend Cody Pomeroy a message :   I still dig it, It's not as nice as it was when I first saw it but the Illustration is spot on. This would have caught my eye had I seen it walking past a record shop. Isn't that it's purpose? Advertisement? Isn't that any of these poster's purposes? I mean yeah, it's nice if it makes a statement but isn't the base point of it just to say, "Go see this"?   2003-09-19 17:43:59
DeckerSend Decker a message :   The band's vibe, music and lyrical content like the poster art is subjective. You can key off a certain song and it may say something very different than what the band had intended just as easily as the bands vibe can be misinterpreted. The Ames Bros have made a truck load of Pearl Jam posters why constrain themselves to that rule for one show when they've made so many. It's just one show. They also have a responsibility to themselves as artists. Artist in most cases aren't getting paid nor art directed to adhere to a subject or theme. I'm not saying the band vibe shouldn't be taken into consideration, just that you also have a resposibility to yourself by putting your personal vision and style into a poster that will be seen for at best a week.   2003-09-19 16:10:16
seripopSend seripop a message :   well i think catching the vibe of the band with yr art is probally the most important part of making a good poster.. i'm guess from the looks of this, this is probably an older ames poster cause generally thier layout is tighter.   2003-09-19 15:55:41
DeckerSend Decker a message :   I'm not trying to start shit just looking for an answer.   2003-09-19 15:29:36
DeckerSend Decker a message :   So his point is that a gigposter by Chantry docturine must depict in design or illustration the very essence of the band it is promoting? I'd say most of the posters on this site break that rule.   2003-09-19 15:19:38
Dusty!Send Dusty! a message :   Arts point, as far as i see it is that you could put any band name on there and it wouldnt matter you could swap out pearl jam for Queens of the stone age and it wouldnt make a difference.   2003-09-19 15:05:10
DeckerSend Decker a message :   I'm not sure what the hell Chanrty's point is. What exactly are gigposter to be about? Why isn't everything you do a potential portfolio piece. Does he mean to imply that he just slaps shit together without a care or personal pride? Is that what he is suggesting gigposters are, just slapped together shit for the sake of it being "just a poster" Is it awful because it's a Pearl Jam poster. Or is it awful that the Ames bros. scrored a nice excluslive deal with them. Is it awful that the fans of both the Ames Bros and Pearl Jam will want to purchase this poster. What is self indulgent about this? Is it because they continue to make great posters or that they continue to work with a band that everyone seems to loathe? Should they not push their own boundries and grow as artists and individuals? Or should they stay stagnant to fit into Chanrty's ideal of what a gigposter is to be? WHAT IS A GIGPOSTER?   2003-09-19 15:00:49
PlantweedSend Plantweed a message :   Too many thin skins around here. And goofy internet antics. It's only 1s and 0s, folks.   2003-09-19 13:51:25
lil_tuffySend lil_tuffy a message :   Yeah, I kinda figured that this is the kinda thing that lit a fire under 8ball's ass.
This is one of the few Ames posters that doesn't do it for me. I just don't think that it's a successful composition. But to have one poster out of their PJ catalog is pretty amazing.

MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   Ah!! I think this might have been the point 8Ball was trying to make.

i think it's time the ames boys went back to their corners and really talked about what the hell it is that they think they're doing.
they are getting too self-indulgent and beginning to miss the point of what posters are supposed to be about in the first place.
i mean, this is a bad illus without any point and PEARL JAM stuffed haphazardly into it.
i'm sure it'll make a mint, but who cares?
stinks."
8Balls posts have a point of reference for me now.

HYNESSend HYNES a message :   I've got a whole lot to say on the AMes approach to poster design, but have restrained myself starting a thread about it. I love their imagery, but seriously question the validity of their approach.   2003-09-01 16:06:45

art chantrySend art chantry a message :   maybe, but sometimes i wonder whether if they think they are doing posters or just building an impressive illustration portfolio.
frankly, they do great images, but taken as a whole, they are beginning to look like pretty weak posters. what's the point any more? i gotta ask...
