Michael ApparatusSend Michael Apparatus a message :   Ok. I'm not supporting what Mister Keezer said but I do support his right to voice his opinion...even though people aren't big fans of hearing opinions about their work on this site for some reason.
He's one guy. Who cares?
And really, it's an interesting question. What other imagery could've been less expected but equally appropriate for the poster?

MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   If you don't know how I feel about this allready you have not been paying attention to anything I have said in these comments over the last 2 years . To some it up, I think Mr Keezer is way off base. His opinions are valid as anyone elses, I just think he is off base.

Dan KeezerSend Dan Keezer a message :   Brendan Jordan: "it's the kind of comment you'd expect to hear from someone trying earnestly to be constructive with a fellow artist"
Brendan is exactly right here, I'm not trying to rock the boat here just throwing out some criticism (which doesn't happen all to often on, especially with the experienced printmakers).
I'm not one to play into internet message board drama so just don't worry about it. My opinion only it seems.

bdixSend bdix a message :   This also catches the vibe of Atlanta too. At least the vibe that I got while I was there.   2004-08-30 19:26:12
Michael M. MotorcycleSend Michael M. Motorcycle a message :   I like it too. Sometimes African Americans have afros. Sometimes they like soul music. So.   2004-08-30 19:22:50

ToothSend Tooth a message :   this kicks the world in the ass. sometimes the bass just needs to go BOOM BOOM BOOM.   2004-08-30 19:03:39
bdixSend bdix a message :   To add more...this is timeless and classic and considering the diversity of the line-up I think it's spot on.
Perhaps a better word than predictable or pedestrian would be traditional?

printmafia-connieSend printmafia-connie a message :   :| yeahhh boy, we always go for predictable...   2004-08-30 18:43:36
Brendan JordanSend Brendan Jordan a message :   I think Dan's critique, as he's restated it, is a viable one; it's the kind of comment you'd expect to hear from someone trying earnestly to be constructive with a fellow artist.
I also think that in this case Print Mafia made the poster that best fit, and will best represent the event while also being commercially successful in ways most of us have not yet experienced. So again, good job.
  2004-08-30 18:43:26
Dan KeezerSend Dan Keezer a message :   Just so thereís no confusion... I was definitely not offended by this poster, that would be insane.
I'm just saying there could be more to it, seems to me the imagery is a very obvious choice, its predictable. If thatís what you were going for, then bravo.
  2004-08-30 17:53:40
bdixSend bdix a message :   I'll be requiring one of these in Seattle. What a fucking line-up!   2004-08-30 09:36:05
printmafia-connieSend printmafia-connie a message :   Wattstaxx is exactly what we were going for. The promotor is looking at the event to be perceived that way as well.
These were made to be sold at the event by the promotor. He loved it - not offended at all.
There is a difference between using an image like this because you can't come up with an original idea and using it to pay tribute to an era of music and style.
If that is too pedestrian we'll keep on walkin'

UnitusSend Unitus a message :   word.
this poster rocks. print mafia rules. sometimes it's nice to look at a poster and understand what it's for without reading the fucking bullshit "artist statement."
  2004-08-30 00:32:15
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   Yeah, heaven forbid you actually make a poster that fits the event.   2004-08-29 23:48:37
Brendan JordanSend Brendan Jordan a message :   I think it's more or less expected imagery for a show like this. I assume it wasn't meant to be at all insulting, and I'm not sure that it is. Of course I wouldn't be the one insulted by this sort of imagery, so who am I to say.
I think the poster is cool.
  2004-08-29 23:29:02
Dan KeezerSend Dan Keezer a message :   i'm gonna drop the ball on this one...
Using a black woman with an afro for a event entitled "Soul Fest" is pretty pedestrian, I'm positive you guys could have come up with something more original.
Otherwise, very well crafted, I dig her blown-out earring a lot.
