Sorry I can't recall the artist's name, but he drew a comic strip called Gasoline Alley from like the 1930s up until recently? He used to do a flat plaid pattern like that, regardless of shapes etc. I really enjoyed that guys work....I'm gonna go look for it on the net.
My favorite example for drawing plaid in this manner is Walt Simonson's take on Doc Magus' smoking jacket from his run ('76 to '77) on METAL MEN.
If an earlier example of another cartoonist using this design style can be found, I've never seen it.
