for the record, it's not permanently installed yet. What's hanging above my drawing table right now is a Tara McPherson, but it's also a Built To Spill poster. So that like, counts for something, right?
Thanks everyone. These will be on sale on our site with proceeds going to Fantagraphics Books. We'll also have them at Flatstock (I say this only cuz you asked)
I also meant to say that in case you didn't already know (duh) the eight artists are: Clowes, Crumb, Bagge, Ryan, Dietch, Woodring, Ware, and Herriman
This does need some explaining.
As most of you know, Fantagraphics Books has run into some pretty serious financial trouble recently due in large part to a substantial unpaid debt by a distributor. So, in an effort to help out the publisher many folks have been rallying together fans to buy online, etc. (there was a thread about that here, on gigposters). Thankfully, it's helping but there is still a ways to go. Among other things, they are doing benefit shows to help raise more cash. So, Eric Reynolds, Fantagraphics publicist, asked Patent Pending if we'd be willing to donate design and printing for a poster for a Built To Spill / Kinski benefit show at the Crocodile (there's also one at the Tractor Tavern with Built To Spill). There were no parameters set besides needing to have it designed and printed in about four days.
He suggested that we use art from some of the books and comics Fantagraphics has released, but otherwise we had cart blanche to do whatever we wanted. He sent over a big stack of stuff that we didn't already have. We settled on the idea of nine mini posters within one big poster using art from eight of our favorite cartoonists. We tried to render it in their style as if they had done each mini poster themselves. Each one is a collage that culls from different sources. The typography is either their own that we manipulated or recreated to (hopefully) look like something they might have done.
They'll be for sale at the show with the money going to Fantagraphics.
