mnottSend mnott a message :   A poster for "The Killer" and this is all he could come up with?   2005-01-03 16:17:29
Darren GrealishSend Darren Grealish a message :   I dig the photo. Amazing pose, amazing coler, amazing girl, standard type. Frank, if you saw this in 1981 would it catch your eye?   2004-01-22 00:59:03
JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   Only Masse knows.   2002-07-11 02:50:18
kozikSend kozik a message :   for me this poster does suck...not cause of Garbo, but its just like not interesting to look at at all. its boring.
I was just trying to explain (maybe) the use of the image.
unless theres like some weird connection I cant figure out between the acts and Garbo.

UnflownSend Unflown a message :   I'm sure youre right, Frank. Masse made these 'back in the day' so context matters a great deal. I'm too snot-nosed to know better. As far as NOW, it really doesnt mean a thing. In that sense, its hard to imagine it being 'successful', but maybe.... Its an awfully well-known photo of Garbo with very little, uh, 'undermining' to justify it in my eyes. But that's one man's opinion. My other opinion is that Garbo's one sexy lady.   2002-07-11 02:43:08
kozikSend kozik a message :   I think collage is acceptable if its a path to sort of mirroring a mood or being sort of Da Da?
so when art sort of re-creates old advertising I think its valid coz its sort of making an inference as to like the fantasy of the band. I think the phenomena of early film in the 60s posters was a sort of fantasy wish fulfillment back to like a sort of surreal spectacle(films) that sort of mirrored the 'surreal movie' that the shows and lifestyle in the 60's represented...period costume dress was a BIG part of the early 60's thing....plus the 60s was like a LOW point in the cult of old movies...a lot of this stuff seems obvious and over used NOW but back in the 60's there was like an 'underground' rediscovery of old films...Woody Allen took the counter-culture affection of old film in the 60's and sort of thrust it main stage in HIS films....so now it seems like there was a continium, but there WASNT. NO ONE but like hippies where into this shit in the 60's.

JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   And remember, I have NO problem with found/stolen imagery. Ive done it myself. Im just for all of us being fair with each other.   2002-07-11 02:24:24
JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   Point taken. Your opinion is valid...because its yours. I really think that way. :-) Still, I say that what some of Chantrys posters are is no different. If I took this photo and put it in a collage, Im still using it. To group an image with bunches of other stolen images doesnt all of a sudden 'change' things. What could masse have done to make this one 'acceptable' to you? How much 'tweaking' makes it OK? This is not sarcasm- real questions.   2002-07-11 02:22:59
kozikSend kozik a message :   hmmm...well...Masse here is like working a real common vein of the NON-illustrative 60's posters where they used like a LOT of imagery from early film. So, its rite in line with many 60's posters.
Kinda looks like a simplistic Singer piece....
probably just knocked it out without a lot of thought...

UnflownSend Unflown a message :   OK. My name was mentioned (legit) and its only right that i respond. Just the same, I've been knocking back Mad Dog (of all things) so go easy...
Now I know the Masse name. Took me by surprise to notice that fact on the poster design. However, not schooled in his work overall. All I can say is: intent is irrelevant here. Its a straight up rip off. No commentary to be gotten. Is that an opinion? I suppose, but no opinion ever came closer to fact. Its really, honestly, a very very inexcusable poster. Mr Masse, you let the masses down. End.

JermaineSend Jermaine a message :   BOB MASSE DID THIS?! Ok..Im shocked cause it isnt like Massos other work...which kinda makes it cool. Is this older? I know Masse...great guy and supertalented artist. Draws Muchaesque gals with the best of em. Old Bob aint afeard of no one...dudes been doing this stuff since the 60's...so I hope he comes on here. Heres another question, especiall for Covey: Given Masse's history and career of great posters, should he be given a bit of 'leeway' on this?   2002-07-10 22:30:29
MaximumFluorideSend MaximumFluoride a message :   If your looking for fame and fortune... posters are not the way to go aboutit. Didn't anyone tell you that Art? :-)   2002-07-10 17:43:07
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   richie -
thanks for the offer of help in my exciting new career path, but i'll just take it off the site here. it's good enough for this stuff. hell, most of this stuff is so vague that i can steal it real easy and nobody will ever know the difference.
damn, i'm gonna be soooo rich and famous and american! damn!

RichieGoodtimesSend RichieGoodtimes a message :   Which poster Art? You want the films or the finished piece to work with?   2002-07-10 17:38:33
UnflownSend Unflown a message :   It aint a Chantry wrath folks have got to concern themselves with. Its the wrath of a life spent pissing on themselves for a clap on the back from their peers.
This is the worst kind of poster. Not only 'ignorant crap' but the disrespect photographers get from designers is amazing.

art chantrySend art chantry a message :   i think i just figured out how to be taken seriously on this site! from now on i'm going to just take your posters and change them into my posters! i'll start with the greta garbo poster and turn it into, say, a king of hawaii poster! brilliant! and then i'll take that vrigil findlay image and turn it into a jerry lee lewis poster! great! and then i'll take that richie goodtimes poster and turn it into a soundgarden poster! damn, i'm onto something here!
i think i'll jump right into the bigtime and take that famous kiozik soundgarden poster and turn it into a ROLLING STONES POSTER!!!!! damn, think of all the money money money i could make!!! and i'll be doing great posters! i'll be famous and rich and american too!!! jeez, look out gigposters, here i come!!
  2002-07-10 17:35:34
RichieGoodtimesSend RichieGoodtimes a message :   To evade the wrath of Chantry, I'll just keep drawing stupid pictures...oh shit...that didn't work either...   2002-07-10 17:30:48
art chantrySend art chantry a message :   here's another good example of pointless ripping. this is a VERY famous photo of greta garbo. so why use it? it's the only thing going on. is it for some editorial comment or some abstract humor purpose? no, it's just a photo that's looks cool. never mind it's one of the most famous movie star photos of all time. are we supposed to think the poster 'artist' took the photo? are we supposed to be impressed with the poster 'srtist's' excellent taste in photos to steal? are we supposed to 'vant to be alone'?
kills me. i'll bet he didn't even know who it was. ignorant crap.
