I would like to see more of Mr. Mitroshin's work. That way I could see if there was some sort of deliberate aesthetic going on here. Is this purposefully bad? Or is it just bad? Even if it was purposeful, is bad really ever good? In order to cross into good, bad needs to have a kernel of novelty or wit or meaning. But then it is no longer bad, it is good exploiting the language of bad. Yeah boiiiii!
yes, lets call it tumblr-core, I like that. I don't think it's bad at being bad on purpose, but it's not all that good at it either. Overall, It's a very aestheticized attempt at "anti-aesthetic." All the right pieces are there, butt fashion, pizza, generic pattern, etc. Rickun is right, this shit is all the rage.... like it or not, it's coming, waves and waves of this shit.... Culture as repeated finger pointing culture
I liked some awful shit when I was a kid and I know you did too Rickun. Just because this represents something that belongs to people who are a certain age at a certain moment in time, and that they identify with, doesn't mean that anybody who craps on it is Grandpaw Crankypants. There are far better examples of this sort of thing. Lots. All I'm saying is, this ain't it.
you guys sound like every other group of old people complaining about kids at any point in recent history...saying some of the same stuff which only further validates this flyer as legitimate. It's working. I go to school with a bunch of kids that eat this stuff up. It speaks directly to them and only them, it's theirs. pizzas are the new owls.
I do see the connection between this, and what Sonnenzimmer or Damien Tran or Strawdogs or others are doing...but the key word is "Doing." This isn't doing anything, it's just sort of there, in. The intent is, no intent. Look what I did, whatever. And yet someone like Dave Flores can do something just as effortless or deliberately bad as this, and it has all the wit and charm this lacks. It's just the absolute path of least resistance.
hmmm - i am not one to usually post negative comments, but i need to use this space to ask a serious question. after reading all the comments below - do y'all think this is really where we are headed?
It's ironic in that it's "bad" on purpose. Maybe that isn't irony, but you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong, I think this aesthetic is extremely interesting on many levels... hell we ape this shit all the time. Rickun, I do think you have a point about this style being similar to folks using old clip art. It's like chantry all over again, but with the 90's not the 60's or whatever.
i think the intention is the same as any other flyer with style - to appeal to the exact audience which finds this appealing, i.e. kids born in the 90s nostalgiac for a 90s aesthetic that never really existed in the first place
Is half-assed an aesthetic?
I don't know... you could say "how is this different from a xerox-ltraset-collage-whiteout-sharpie punk flyer from 1980 and not be far wrong. Except with those too, there are some that are amazing and some that aren't, and the difference is that some have wit, impact, balls, or whatever undefinable thing that ties them together makes them kick ass. Others just grab a bunch of shit and throw it at the wall, and fail. Or maybe once in a while succeed by pure chance. But if the aesthetic is to just not care, the successes are correspondingly few.
there's a whole lot of this going on and has been for enough years that I'm not sure if it's "ironic" anymore. plenty of people on here like to appropriate xeroxed crap or use letraset, youngsters born in the 90s are essentially doing the same thing but with the materials available to them. this is a worldwide aesthetic now thanks to the Tumblr
