long story short, some friends bumped into him at GonerFest and after some conversation he asked them for my number. we chatted for about 20 minutes on a Friday night. so surreal.
I agree with that dan. I always liked to believe the song differences came down to whiny junkie vs angry alcoholic. also it always sounded like grant hit the drums with chopsticks or knitting needles. i dunno - i made a mix of only the bob HD songs - i listen to it more than the albums
Grant could write great songs, but his voice was just too thin to compare in rotation next to Bob's.
Fun Fact: I saw Mould at Treasure Island last year and he tore through a bunch of Sugar tracks and I thought the bass player looked familiar. It was Barbe. A lil mini-Sugar reunion.
I shot some video of them tearing through "Makes No Sense at All" and "New Day Rising"

While we're geekin out about Huskers etc...
Rule: Bob's songs are, on average, better than Grant's on any given album.
Exception: Candy Apple Grey. Grant owns that album; it's his finest moment. "Don't Want to Know..." and "Dead Set on Destruction" are all-time HD classics. Bobs songs are overwrought and stinky.
Black sheets is a great record - bob was signed to Virgin for six records and wanted to "extricate himself from contractual obligations" They dropped him after this record.
I like sugar ok but its not a patch on Husker Du and the solo stuff.
BSOR was awesome.
Just layers and layers of crunch and murk.
One of the best examples of a record cover perfectly representing the music inside.

RisingSon I heart you but you are insane... Sugar was not but a mole on Husker Du's (ample) ass.
I preferred Bob's pre-Sugar solo stuff to Sugar. Black Sheets Of Rain was a real good record that sort of dropped off the radar.
I am so late to these great bands. I can actually hear the bass on these Sugar albums and the drums don't sound like shit. Is really great songwriting.
Hobbs has taste.
First Shudder to Think, now Sugar.
I know it's sacrilege, but as much as I love Hüsker Dü, I always thought Sugar were the far better band.
